Greater Sudbury's own Larry Berrio will perform his new single Cut the Dust at the Country Music Awards during the Industry Lunch Awards, but not before giving his hometown a sneak peek of the track on Aug. 20 at Cranky Joe's.

Berrio said the award show will be “one of the most important performances” of his career, as he will be playing for agents, record labels, radio stations and festival organizers, but he is also looking forward to playing for friends and fans in the city.

Cut the Dust is a song about the “hardworking” men and women who work all week in order to have some fun on the weekend.

“It's related to the typical cowboy or farmer, that just likes to let loose, and looks forward to a weekend after a hard week of work,” Berrio said. “Let's go out and enjoy ourselves on the weekend, whether its ATVing or having a few drinks with friends.”

Berrio said he can relate to the song, and thinks other Sudburians will be able to as well.

“Born and raised in the Valley, you know the amount of potato farmers we have out here,” he said. “Rock Town was based on working in the mines. Both of these songs...are going to relate to a lot of people in the Sudbury area.”

Although Berrio didn't write the song himself, two brothers born in the area did. Recording artists Gil Grand and Jake Mathews penned the track.

“It's really cool to have that the song, that we're releasing, was recorded by a Sudbury guy and written by two Sudbury guys,” Berrio said.

At Cranky Joe's, Berrio's band will accompany him in a live performance of Cut the Dust, and he plans to tell fans more about the song.

Berrio, who was raised in Val Caron and now resides in Hanmner, said “it's more of a party and a get-together with my fans and my friends in the Sudbury area.”

The show kicks off at 9 p.m., and tickets cost $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Proceeds from the release go to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

If a single release party isn't enough for Berrio's fans in one weekend, he'll also be appearing on TSN's Fins and Skins, a show hosted by Henry Waszczuk about fishing and golf, on Aug. 22 at 11 a.m.
