Last Stop for STC's Playwrights' Junction

Sudbury Theatre Centre will present an evening of play readings at 7 p.m. on Jan. 20 by its writers' group, the Playwrights' Junction.

The evening, which has been dubbed Last Stop, features short pieces and excerpts from the works of Jordano Bortolotto, Anne Boutlon, Jesse Brady, Jan Buley, Cait Heppner, Line Roberge, Andy Taylor and Marnie Woodrow.

Last Stop offers the rare opportunity to experience works-in-progress by Sudbury writers developing their talents, according to a press release.

Cats and their owners face off at the local veterinarian, a man aims to create a country in the shape of his own face, a gold heist is staged in the middle of a labour strike, a woman is locked in mortal combat with a mouse – these are just some of the exciting stories in an evening of both big laughs and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

The reading, featuring local actors, will be hosted by Matthew Heiti, STC’s playwright-in-residence and co-ordinator of the Junction.

“Third time’s the charm,” said Heiti, in the press release. “Our third installment of the junction promises to be the best yet. The work of these playwrights is continued proof that something special is happening in this city.”

Playwrights’ Junction is a yearly initiative run by STC with the intent to develop new plays by local writers. Some of the alumni have gone on to have their work professionally developed and produced.

This year’s members have been meeting weekly since the fall, and Last Stop is the culmination of their hard work.
