Laurentian outpaces Canadian universities

An 11 per cent increase in undergraduate admissions for 2009-2010 at Laurentian University demonstrates that education hasn't been dented by the economic challenges of the last two years, says the university.

An 11 per cent increase in undergraduate admissions for 2009-2010 at Laurentian University demonstrates that education hasn't been dented by the economic challenges of the last two years, says the university.

A release issued by the university shows admissions of A+ students increased 10 per cent and A students by nine per cent.

First-year undergraduate admissions have increased 11 per cent, with overall enrolment rising six per cent. French-language undergraduate admissions have risen 26 per cent, and international student admissions have risen 40 per cent.

PhD programs have seen a rise in enrolment of nine per cent.

The undergraduate admission rates at Laurentian University are more than double those of other Canadian universities, with the average being four per cent.

"Laurentian is proud to be the university of choice. We attract more students every year from northeastern Ontario than the next five universities combined," said Dominic Giroux, president, in the release.

"Our success is now also increasingly being notices outside of the northeast, with half our students coming from the rest of the province, the country, and the world. What impressed me the most is that our admissions increase was not due to any lowering of the bar."

The mayor of Greater Sudbury, John Rodriguez, is also a Laurentian alumni. He recently hosted new international students at a welcoming party.

"There is great momentum building at Laurentian University. The partnership between Greater Sudbury and our university has never been stronger, and it ensures our region's future success by attracting and training highly qualified professionals who live, play, and innovate here," said Rodriguez.

Laurentian is the fourth fastest growing university in Ontario since 2002, and has one of the highest post-graduation employment rates.
