Lively District Secondary School will celebrate Aboriginal culture on Nov. 21.  Students will participate in presentations and classroom activities that will enable them to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of First Nations culture and traditions.

In the morning, there will be an opening ceremony from 9:50 am to 10 am.  Afterwards, all students will attend an information session and display of drumming and dancing, from 10 am to 10:25 am (session 1) and 10:30 am to 11:05 am (session 2). Dancers will perform a Grass Dance, a Hoop Dance and a Jingle Dress dance.  Students will learn about the purpose and history of each dance.  A.J. Elliott, a student at Lively District Secondary School, will perform the Grass Dance.

Chief Art Petahtegoose of Whitefish First Nation will provide the opening prayer. Also attending will be Kim Nootchtai, Education Director for Whitefish First Nation, and Katherine Ranney, Rainbow District School Board's Principal for First Nation, Metis and Inuit Education.

Students in the Native Studies class, assisted by Bridget Elliott, will make Indian tacos to sell to staff and students during lunch.

In the afternoon, from 11:55 am to 2:30 pm, classes in all subject areas will focus on Aboriginal content.  For example, a science class will discuss traditional medicines, a law class will hear about treaty issues, physical education classes will participate in Aboriginal games led by members of the Native Studies class, and so on.

Several members of the local Aboriginal community are attending to help with the activities.

Native Studies students have been working on a quilt which will be presented to the school on Aboriginal Day.
