Legendary American singer/songwriter Don McLean, best known
for his 1971 folk anthem American Pie, is one of the headline
acts at the 2008 Northern Lights Festival Boreal this July.
"Don McLean smashed attendance records at Mariposa and Calgary
Folk Fest in 2007," said festival artist director Paul
Loewenberg. "At a time when war and economy is so much on
people's minds, this is a perfect year to have the author of
one of the great classics of modern culture.
McLean also had hits with Vincent (Starry Starry Night), And I
Love Her So, and Crying. As well, he has written a number of
hit songs recorded by other artists.
McLean has released more than 20 albums. American Pie was voted
the fifth greatest song of the 20th century by fans in the
United States.  In 2003, McLean's song, The Grave was
recorded by George Michael in protest at the Iraq War.
Loewenberg also announced Daniel Bélanger has been signed to be
a main stage performer. Bélanger recently won a JUNO for
Francophone Album of the Year for his release L'echec du
materiel.
Loewenberg added, "It is a distinct honour for NLFB to be the
first to promote a concert of Daniel's in Sudbury since he has
become so incredibly popular.
With 35 more incredible folk, indie rock, traditional,
bluegrass and world music artists, Loewenberg said organizers
feel this is their strongest festival yet.
