Opening doors for Sudbury’s singles

An alternative way to meet singles is on its way to Greater Sudbury. Single Status is a way for unattached people of all ages to meet new people and try new things, according to Muriel Maguire. The creator of the new company is also single herself.

An alternative way to meet singles is on its way to Greater Sudbury.

Single Status is a way for unattached people of all ages to meet new people and try new things, according to Muriel Maguire. The creator of the new company is also single herself.

After travelling via singles’ vacations, she decided Sudbury needed an outlet for unattached individuals.

“It’s really difficult to meet people in Sudbury,” she said. “People don’t want to meet in bars. I think Sudbury needs it.”

Maguire, who runs the business from her home, said Single Status isn’t a dating service, but a way for singles to make new friends while getting involved in activities they may not try otherwise, without needing a partner.

Maguire’s business will offer kick-boxing, self-defence, Zumba, ballroom dancing and cooking-for-one classes, along with day trips to paintball parks, Canada’s Wonderland, caving explorations in Collingwood and tree-top trekking in Barrie.

“It’ll be great to have a group of people doing these things,” Maguire said.

All of the activities offered by Single Status are open to men and women of any age.

Single Status will offer different activities on different nights of the week. This way, people can attend the classes that are most convenient for them.

“It’s never going to be the same class being taught.”

By having some special-interest classes, Maguire said she also hopes people will be able to form friendships and relationships by bonding over that interest.

“You’re being blended with people who like the same things you like,” she said.

The classes also act as a sampler of activities offered in Greater Sudbury. If a participant is unsure about whether they will enjoy taking a particular class regularly, they can come out for a night of it, without having to commit to a membership or sign up for a series of classes. All the activities, aside from the trips, will be held in Sudbury.

“I’m trying to help other local businesses,” Maguire said.

Maguire modeled the business after some of the vacations she has been on, and included her favourite elements from those trips. Bigger Canadian cities like Toronto have similar businesses, but according to Maguire, this is the first of its kind in Sudbury.
