Paramedics stress importance of CPR training

The Greater Sudbury Paramedic Association is encouraging citizens to learn Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, also know as CPR.

Members of the organization have recently experienced a situation where a citizen's CPR performance,  prior to the arrival of professional help, was successful. The association is proud of this citizen and the team who responded to the emergency, stated a news release.

CPR is not likely to restart the heart, but it maintains a flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart, delaying tissue death and extending the brief window of opportunity for successful resuscitation without permanent brain damage. Defibrillation and advanced life support provided by paramedics are needed to restart the heart and is significantly more effective in combination with citizen CPR.

Quick citizen CPR and early intervention of paramedics significantly improves the chance of a successful resuscitation with a full recovery, stated the news release.

CPR is an emergency medical procedure for a victim of cardiac arrest. First Aid and CPR training teaches choking procedures, emergency medical response and response to life-threatening situations. In addition, these courses teach key injury prevention strategies and other life-saving techniques.

First Aid and CPR training is available at a number of locations throughout the city and is designed to give citizens the confidence to respond in emergency situations with skills that can save a life.
