It's been said that every dog has his day. This weekend, Sept. 12 to 14, thousands of homeless dogs and cats will have an entire weekend devoted to finding loving families.

PetSmart Charities teams up with animal-welfare groups throughout North America in PetSmart stores for the annual fall adoption weekend.

More than 2,000 animal organizations are expected to participate, with the goal of placing 15,000 homeless pets with new families.

Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of PetSmart Charities said, "Our vision is a lifelong, loving home for every pet. We have created and supported numerous programs that help the adoption of shelter pets, and we firmly believe that adoption should be the first option when you are ready to add a new companion animal to the family."

"During fiscal year 2007, PetSmart Charities awarded $6.6 million in grant funding specifically to support shelter-pet adoption efforts," said Della Maddalena.

Prospective adopters are encouraged to visit any PetSmart store in Canada and the U.S. from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13. Hours on Sunday, Sept. 14 are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
