Pinecrest Public School will unveil its regreening project on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

"Last year, we applied for and won The Ugliest Schoolyard Contest sponsored by the vegetation enhancement technical advisory committee and the City of Greater Sudbury," said Principal Jacques Mantha. "We received $20,000 in landscaping services and products. This brought us a huge step forward into turning our vision into reality."

The 25 students in the Pinecrest Garden Club worked with members of the community to beautify the school grounds. The area is accessible to all students and features a new concrete pathway winding through a lovely garden. New alder trees provide shade for the students while park benches provide a quiet reading area.

"Our schoolyard is a tremendous source of pride for students, staff and the community," Mantha said. "We would like to thank all sponsors and donors of The Ugliest Schoolyard Contest for helping us achieve our goals."

The school's sponsors built a basketball court, did excavation work, installed concrete paths, provided design services and donated topsoil, compost, peat moss, sod, trees, perennials and shrubs.

Sponsors include Xstrata Nickel, Canadian Tire, Carniello Contracting, Saturn Sudbury, Horticulturalist James St. John, WD Tree Removal, Freskiw Farms, CVRD Inco, Rona Cashway, Hollas Produce and Greenhouses, Hollandia Land and Environmental Solutions, Ashley Landscape Supplies, Southview Greenhouse Growers, Sudbury Master Gardeners, Adam & Eve Garden Centre, the Sudbury Horticultural Society, Botanix Azilda Greenhouses and Whitewater Greenhouses and Yard Art Centre.

Pinecrest Public School is located at 1650 Dominion Dr. in Hamner.
