Catherine Mariotti, a local potter, is selling a lot of her art at the Small Things arts, books, crafts and delights store in the Southside Business Centre, said store proprietor Jan Carrie Steven.

“Catherine's work is really popular. I think it is because it is beautiful and she is keeping her pricing so affordable. People appreciate that and are stocking up,” Steven said.

Mariotti has her own studio, Otter Pond, in a natural area in the western half of the city. The name reflects the abundant wild creatures nearby, she noted.

“I have always loved pottery, collecting pieces and going to shows for years,” Mariotti said.

About five years ago she started taking hand-building and wheel lessons from local potters. Then she joined the Sudbury Basin Potters Guild.

“I am beginning to understand the process but have a lot more to learn,” she admitted.

“Some of my pieces are hand-built and some are wheel thrown. A lot of my ideas stem from nature. I love the earth tones.”

Small Things is located at 1375 Regent St. south, unit 6. It is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The store offers free coffee and fudge samples. There is also a great selection of used books. Phone 596-7628 or visit www.smallthings.ca.
