For the last 10 years, Silvia Rios, owner of La Casa Mexicana, has been living her dream of feeding residents of Greater Sudbury traditional Mexican food, first from a booth in Market Square and now from two restaurants, one on Elgin Street and the other on Lasalle Boulevard.

Every year at Christmas, Rios says thank you to the community that has made her restaurants successful by choosing to help support different causes. This year, she has chosen to help Local 6500 strikers and their families.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, La Casa Mexicana is hosting Acapulco Night at the Jubilee Centre, located at 195 Applegrove Street.

The night begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails, and a buffet dinner will be served at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance, or $35 at the door, with the proceeds going to the United Steelworkers Local 6500.

Over the last several years, La Casa Mexicana has donated to the United Way and the Diabetes Association.

The buffet will consist of traditional Mexican food, provided by La Casa Mexicana. There will be pozole (a corn, pork and chicken dish), tamales, Mexican lemon rice, fresh guacamole, and Aztec salad.

Music for the evening will be a mix of familiar music and Mexican tunes, provided by DJ Whitie. Door prizes have been provided by several local businesses, including Bertolo's, El Mercado, and Village International.

Rios came to Canada from Acapulco 18 years ago, after meeting her husband while he was on vacation. She trained at Cambrian College as a chef, and opened a booth 10 years ago in Market Square.

After three years at the market, she moved her restaurant to a building at the corner of Elgin and Elm Streets. Rios opened a second location on Lasalle Boulevard three years ago.

Tickets to the event are available at the La Casa Mexicana locations at 49 Elgin Street and 1142 Lasalle Boulevard, as well as at Black Cat at the corner of Durham and Larch streets.
