The German Language School is preparing to offer children and adult classes at Sudbury Secondary School in late September. People who are interested should register now for the classes.

Founded in 1960 by a group of dedicated parents, including Adam Paul and Father Arthur Heinrichs, the goal of the school is to pass on German language and culture to others.

Birgit Pianosi, who came over from Germany 10 years ago originally to visit her sister, and who now lives here, and is a member of  school's board of directors.

She says it's important to offer the classes because of the large local German population.

"I know for a fact we have a really big German community full of German immigrants living in the Sudbury area," says Pianosi.

She says she thinks there is lot of stereotyping attached to many Germans to this day as a result of the Second World War.

"When Germans came over after the Second World War, they didn't' want to be identified, because there was a stigma..." she explains.

"Now, with my generation and with the newcomers coming over to Canada, those things have changed and we are proud to be known as German."

The school appointed a whole new board two years ago in the hopes of expanding the school's curriculum and putting more of an emphasis on culture, rather than just language.

They are planning on implementing those changes even more this school year and are hoping to be able to offer two adult and two children's courses, as long as they attract at least 15 students for each class. The children's classes would be for those between the ages of four and 12 and would be offered free  every week for 24 weeks.

Ideally, there will also be two adult classes at a cost of approximately $70 for those aged 12 and up. One would start in late September and would last for 10-12 weeks, while the other would begin latter.
