Second City tickles Sudburians’ funny bones

Just as it was promoted, comics from the dinner theatre production, Economy of Errors, did the unexpected.

Just as it was promoted, comics from the dinner theatre production, Economy of Errors, did the unexpected.

Second City comedians Jason DeRosse and Carly Heffernan accosted members of the audience with one of their skits Saturday night at the Navy League Hall on Regent Street.

The two comics were part of a six member comedy troupe that entertained more than 220 guests at Theatre Cambrian’s Comedy of Errors dinner theatre evening.

The two were acting as a couple feeding pigeons in a park setting. While “feeding” the pigeons and throwing bits of paper into the audience (simulating bread and bird seed) the two suddenly focused on a front table where two families were sitting.

The pair started shouting at one person at the table, telling him to leave and “get away.” The in-your-face comedy routine was met by howls of laughter, both from the table of people accosted and from the general audience. The comedians kept it up until the male jumped up and left, after which Heffernan quipped “darn squirrel.” The audience howled further at the skit’s wind-up line.

The six comics, in the second half of their revue, involved members of the audience in various improv skits, much to the delight of those asked up on stage and the whole audience, said organizers.

“We got some good comments on the show,” said Mark Mannisto, executive director of Theatre Cambrian.

“This was the first time we have ever done this type of show. I would like to see Second City come back on an annual basis.” Though the show faced competition from the jazz festival the same night at Science North, Mannisto said he was pleased with the turnout.

“I think we made money from the event though all the numbers are not yet in yet.”

The dinner theatre featured a roast beef meal, catered by Simon’s Gallery Grill.

Upcoming Theatre Cambrian productions are Disney’s Alladin Jr. Dec. 10-19, West Side Story March 11-27, and an Elvis rendition, All Shook Up, May 13-29.
