Silverbirch marks the first commercial CD recording for Sudbury's Silver Birch String Quartet, and is a collaboration between the group and their longtime friend, Montreal-based jazz pianist John Roney. The disc features original jazz compositions from John Roney, as well as his arrangements of such jazz classics as "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane, and "Bibo no Aozora" by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
The CD's will be for sale at the release being held at Little Montreal Bar & Deli, 187 Elgin St., on Wednesday, Aug. 20 with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. The quartet, together with Roney, will be performing at the event as part of their northern Ontario tour.
Founded in 2003 under the auspices of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra, the Silver Birch String Quartet is one of Ontario's exciting and innovative young quartets, quickly earning praise for their vibrant performances throughout Ontario and Quebec.
Pianist John Roney is one of the most active and visible artists on the Canadian music scene. His versatility as a jazz pianist, classical pianist and composer is unrivaled, demonstrating a mastery of an astonishingly vast range of artistic abilities and sensibilities, stated a press release.
