The Sudbury Symphony continues its Chamber Concert season as it features virtuoso oboist Joey Salvalaggio, in “Song of the Oboe,” an exploration of the instrument’s range and beauty. Salvalaggio will be accompanied by the symphony’s string quartet: Beth Schneider-Gould, violin, Melissa Schaak, violin, Geoff McCausland, viola, and Dobrochna Zubek, cello.

The concert takes place on Saturday, January 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Place des Arts.

The program is centred around Mozart’s Oboe Quartet in F Major written in 1781, the

only chamber music he wrote for the oboe. It is a favourite among oboists and audiences alike as, over the course of three contrasting movements, it shows off the virtuosity of the performer as well as the technical improvements that had been made to the oboe at that time, all in the inimitable style of the genius Mozart.

Also on the program is Calla Lilies, the second movement of the Oboe Concerto by Canadian composer Marjan Mozetich.

This piece uses the strings to paint a beautiful canvas for the push and pull of the soaring oboe melody, employing both the luminous textures of the strings and the full expressive range of the oboe.

The oboe is centre stage once more in Searching for Sophia, by Elizabeth Raum, a reknowned composer and Canadian oboist who has performed with the Sudbury Symphony on a number of occasions.

The piece is delivered in three movements based on childhood memories of tunes heard at Raum’s grandmother’s house, evoking a sense of birth and awakening.

To round out the program, the Sudbury Symphony String Quartet will be playing Music for the Family from the World of Tangos.

Tickets are available at maplacedesarts.ca or by phone at 705-885-1076.
