More than 13,000 km were logged on Sudbury streets on Sunday for the third annual SudburyROCKS!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes, in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association. 
The event grew in 2008 to more than 1,300 participants in all the distance events - marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K and kids' 1K - who, in turn, raised more than $50,000 towards local programs and diabetes research. 
Event organizers wished to thank all the volunteers who made the event such a great success. More than 250 volunteers were out on race day, cheering on runners and walkers at water stations and acting as race marshals on the course and at the YMCA, co-ordinating the event.  Some volunteers were out as early as 2 a.m. helping to set up the course.
A special thanks was also extended to the Celebrity Challenge participants for their help in promoting the five km event - which grew to 450 participants this year, almost double from 2007. 
"The efforts of our celebrities helped to show citizens of the City of Greater Sudbury that you can take steps to be more active and healthy," a press release stated.  "A huge congratulations to our Celebrity Walkers and Runners for a job very well done." 
The Celebrity able to boast as the 2008 Sudbury's Fastest Celebrity is Randy Pascal of Persona Channel 10 and Northern Life columnist, who clocked an extremely fast race, the release continued.  Pascal will be the proud owner of the Celebrity Challenge trophy and have boasting rights until May 3 2009 - the 4th annual Sudbury Rocks!!! Race.
