École secondaire catholique l'Horizon of Val Caron and École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord of Blind River will represent the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) at the provincial boat-racing competition organized by Skills Canada-Ontario.

This is the third consecutive year Horizon has won the gold medal at the regional level. For Jeunesse-Nord, this was the first time participating at the regional level, as well as a first at the provincial level. In all, 12 of the 23 participating teams were from the CSCNO, which also represented eight of the top 15 places in the competition. Both winning teams will head to the provincial competition in Kitchener-Waterloo on Feb. 26.

At the elementary level, two other schools, Ste-Marie of Azilda and Alliance St-Joseph of Chelmsford, won second and third place respectively during a skills competition held on Jan. 27.

Ginette Poulin-Vaillancourt, co-ordinator of student services for Grades 7 through 12, explained these annual events are becoming increasingly popular in the CSCNO schools.

"These competitions allow students to be valued in a context which encourages not only mathematical and technical skills, but also creativity and teamwork - two essential skills in today's workplace. With the help of their teachers, students learn about various trades and skills available to them after high school."

She added the board encourages its students to participate in the numerous competitions organized by Skills Canada-Ontario, notably robotics and the popular solar vehicle competition.
