Students to attend presentation on road safety

Confederation Secondary School students will watch a presentation about road safety this afternoon, Nov. 23.

The presentation, entitled I-Drive “Road Stories” Road Safety Smart Choices, is sponsored by the the Ministry of Transportation in partnership with Arrive Alive Ontario, Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving (OSAID), Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Transport Canada, and the Ontario Ministry of Health.

Motivational speaker and educator, actor Matt John Evans, winner of the 2006 Ontario Road Safety Award for professionalism (www.mattjohnevans.com), will give a half-hour presentation.

Evans will speak to students about peers, parties, alcohol, and smart choices.

The students will also watch a DVD called I-Drive, which is intended to raise awareness among drivers and passengers under the age of 25 about the risks and consequences of aggressive and unsafe driving.

After the presentation and discussion, participants will be able to:

  • Better identify risks and consequences of driver distraction, speeding, drowsy driving, impairment by alcohol and drugs, and failing to buckle up
  • Recognize factors that contribute to these unsafe driving behaviors
  • Develop strategies for making better driving-related decisions
