Sudbury celebrates Canada’s birthday

There’s lots to do around Sudbury on Wednesday to celebrate the birthday of Canada. The Sudbury Multicultural and Folk Arts Association has organized a city celebration the morning of Canada Day at the fully air conditioned Sudbury Arena.

An interactive puppet show, presented in French, brings the novel Bozo l’orignal vampire, written by Sudbury author Normand Renaud, to life on the main stage at Science North from 4-4:45 p.m.

There’s lots to do around Sudbury on Wednesday to celebrate the birthday of Canada.

The Sudbury Multicultural and Folk Arts Association has organized a city celebration the morning of Canada Day at the fully air conditioned Sudbury Arena. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for seniors and youth. Children 12 years and under are admitted free.

At 9:50 a.m. there will be a parade, led by City of Greater Sudbury Police Services Pipe Band, from Memorial Park to Sudbury Arena.

Inside the arena at 10:11 a.m., the national anthem, O Canada, in both English and French, will be sung, followed by greetings from dignitaries, and presentations of a series of community awards.

At 11 a.m. a plethora of food booths and craft tables will be open, followed by continuous entertainment until 5 p.m.

The event features multi-ethnic food and crafts, ethnic and local performances and a huge Canada Day birthday cake.

In the afternoon and evening, Canada Day celebrations switch over to the grounds of Science North.

Free family entertainment on the main stage kicks off at 12:30 p.m. Acts includes headliners, The Giselles, featuring Sudbury’s own Pandora Topp, who will take the stage at 8 p.m.

Don’t miss the Canada Day EZ Rock Idol competition taking place on the main stage from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. and 7 to 7:45 p.m. After a rigorous audition process, 14 people have survived and are set to make their appearance debut.

Canada Day at Science North also features children’s entertainers performing in English and French. There is Spirit of the World Drumming, an aboriginal welcome song by the White Bear Singers and entertaining science activities for kids of all ages.

A special IMAX deal means visitors can enjoy a giant screen film for only $5.

At about 10:15 p.m., weather permitting, there will be a “spectacular” fireworks display by Dream Catcher Fireworks of Sudbury, according to organizers.

By taking part in the Canada Day Family Celebrations at Science North, guests will be eligible to enter for a chance to win a Getaway to Georgian Bay, including a guided ATV tour, a Muskokan cruise, kayaking and a visit to the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. To enter this contest, visit the EZ Rock booth at Science North on Canada Day and fill out a ballot. The draw will be held at around 7:45 p.m.

The Anderson Farm in Lively will host its own kind of birthday party for the country. The Rock the Farm event will feature Superstack on stage from 7-8 p.m. as part of a four-concert summer series. Admission is free. Phone 561-2638.
