The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra has revealed its 47th season lineup, a season during which its new artistic director will be revealed.

You will remember that last season, SSO presented the search finalists Josh Wood and Jamie Arrowsmith.

The first three main series concerts in the 2023-24 symphony season will feature the other three finalists: Michael Hall, Bill Rowson and François Koh.

The new artistic director will finally be named in January 2024.

“It’s going to be tough deciding on just one of these music directors, but we promise to do just that and to give Sudbury an even stronger artistic presence with its orchestra,” said a press release from SSO.

The first concert, taking place on September 23, will be directed by Michael Hall. He will lead the orchestra through Dvorak’s 9th Symphony, the wonderful “New World.”

Maestro Hall will also lead the orchestra in a piece for solo bassoon, strings and percussion with the famous Canadian Bassoonist, Nadina Mackie.

The October 14 concert will be directed by Bill Rowson, who has chosen to focus his concert on Beethoven’s 7th Symphony and Brahms Academic Festival Overture.

The third finalist, François Koh has chosen to conduct the Poème for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 25 by Ernest Chausson with Guest soloist Bénédicte Lauzière along with Légendes, opus 76 by Jacques Hétu, which brings some very puzzling Quebec legends to musical life, and, of course, he will also add some selected seasonal favourites.

Later in the season, the SSO will present a special event that will attract audience from all walks of life to the Place des Arts.

The SSO will present two performances of the iconic Mozart Requiem with Sudbury Chamber Singers and the Bel Canto Chorus March 23 evening and March 24 afternoon.

There will be a flurry of special events tied to this presentation over the weekend, including an airing or 2 of “Amadeus” at Indie Cinema. (much of the soundtrack of the film is music from the Requiem.)

Details and dates for Chamber Music and Free Library Concerts will be released soon. Please follow SSO on Facebook or the website for details as they develop.

Season tickets are available through the STC box office. Single seat sales will open Aug. 15.

Sales for the Mozart Requiem are on sale now through the Place des Arts Box office 705-885-1076 or online through Thepointofsale.com.
