Tourism: Greater Sudbury's passport to prosperity

Co-ordinated by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada around the theme "Potential Worth Exploring!," Tourism Week provides a focal point for activities and events planned across the country by businesses, provincial, territorial and regional tourism industry associations, destination marketing organizations, and others.

Here in Greater Sudbury, events and activities include: 125th anniversary celebrations and the Grand Opening of the Downtown Visitor Information Centre at the VIA Rail station on Elgin Street, both occurring June 7.

Tourism keeps 1.66 million Canadians working, supports economic and community development, and generates over $19.4 billion in tax revenues for all levels of government - money that pays for a range of important programs like health care and education, the press release stated.

In Greater Sudbury, tourists spent over $171 million  in 2004, representing an average spending of $134 per person, per night.  

"We see Greater Sudbury as one of Ontario's top four visitor destinations," said Rob Skelly, manager of Tourism, Culture and Marketing, City of Greater Sudbury. "For our part, Sudbury Tourism markets our city as a unique visitor destination with the objective to increase visitations by providing our guests with true northern hospitality."
