“We are looking for 1,000 students to raise a minimum of $100 each for United Way,” said Emily Mackwood, United Way resource development manager.

Mackwood said United Way is working with all four school boards through their guidance departments to encourage youth to participate. The campaign wraps up Nov. 27.

“On Monday a number of guidance departments in various schools will have packages with pledge forms, buttons, rules and tips for the students.”

Not all schools have got on board the campaign yet. Students in those schools and who want to participate can pick up the United Way packages at the United Way offices, 105 Elm Street, located by the railway tracks Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Mackwood said she expects the youth would talk to their family and friends rather than going door to door.

There are prizes for youth who raise the most money. They include a private video party for 30 friends at the IMAX theatre at Science North for the student who raises the most money above $100. The homeroom class which raises the most above $100 will win a private viewing of their film of choice at IMAX. All participants will be included in a draw for a brand new laptop donated by Vale Inco.

Harnessing youth to be part of United Way is a key goal of United Way efforts this year, said Mackwood.

“By increasing youth engagement, we are building a strong foundation for United Way in our community.”

Over 60 programs are delivered by United Way through over 30 agencies throughout the city, said Mackwood.
