If you want to keep in shape this winter and lose a few pounds before summer bathing suit season begins, Delki Dozzi playground in Gatchell has what you need.

Ward 1 Coun. Joe Cimino announced Friday that effective immediately, the Sudbury Cycling Track will be cleared of snow and sanded for walking and jogging on snowy days.

The track is across from the Delki Dozzi Playground and Community Centre on Mary Street. Cyclists use the track during the spring to late fall season.

"My constituents have been asking for a safe alternative to walking or jogging on public roads this winter," said Cimino.

"I am pleased that the recreational staff of the City of Greater Sudbury have been able to accommodate this request by providing a cleared track at the Delki Dozzi Playground."

According to Cimino, the track has been cleared in the past, but the issue lately has been where to get the money for the snow clearing and who would do it.

"I got a call on Monday from a resident, and then I decided to dip into my ward community improvement fund. On Tuesday I put a call into our parks staff and said my fund would pay for it. By Friday, the job of clearing was done by parks staff," he said.

The councillor said while the action was modest, it did represent a move to making the city more pedestrian friendly.

"Our city manager, Catherine Matheson, is preparing a report for city council on just this topic, of encouraging people to walk or jog more, for recreation and health benefits. This is one small action towards that worthy goal," said Cimino.

"I was out there Saturday and saw a number of people making use of the track already."
