Science North hosts Northern MedTalks

April 27 

Science North is preparing to host the third annual Northern MedTalks event on April 27, at 7 p.m. Once again, 10 Northern Ontario health care leaders will take the stage and share engaging stories about human health in this free event. Each 10-minute talk is co-produced by health-care presenters and master’s students of the Science Communication program led by Laurentian University and Science North. Tickets for the in-person presentations in the Vale Cavern are sold out, but a live stream will be available on Eastlink Community TV beginning at 7 p.m. and accessible online through Science North’s website. Shkagamik-Kwe presents Remains

April 27-29

After the death of their uncle, the time has come for Dust and Bone to face their deepest fears. Two brothers, on a well worn path of secrets and denial, find their ancestors holding them and turning them toward truth and their love for one another. A Project Uncle performance, Remains is, at its core, about healing. It is about deep loss and even deeper love. It is about grieving what we’ve lost and honouring what remains. Remains stars local Anishinaabe artists Brett Recollet, Lisa-Marie Naponse, Leland Bell, Lois Apaquash and one awesome Zhaaganash, Bill Sanders. Original music created by Leland Bell, Arlo Gartshore and Lisa-Marie Naponse. Soundtrack by Marc Donato. Set design by Sarah King Gold. Event runs April 27-29 at Place des Arts. Sudbury Theatre Centre PA Day Camp

April 28

Exploration and fun are the key words for Sudbury Theatre Centre’s PA Day Theatre Camps for youth ages eight to 12. Six full-day Theatre Camps will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Remaining dates this school year include Friday, April 28 and Friday June 9. The program includes collaborative activities and games designed to build imagination, confidence, and creative expression. Visit sudburytheatre.com/youth for more information and to register.

La Brunante workshops

April 28-30

Les Concerts La Nuit sur l’étang is inviting all French-language groups and solo performers to sign up for three days of workshops at la Brunante 2023. The workshops will be held at College Boréal in Greater Sudbury from Friday, April 28 to Sunday, April 30. The sessions are open to all French language performers from across Ontario. Steps for Life – Walking for Families of Workplace Tragedy

April 29 

There’s strength in numbers, but there’s also empathy, encouragement and shared passion for a cause. When it comes to Steps for Life – Walking for Families of Workplace Tragedy, which runs April 29, the empathy and encouragement are for those who’ve experienced a work-related death or injury. The shared passion is for the cause of prevention. Through Steps for Life, communities like Sudbury across Canada will tap into that strength, raising awareness of health and safety and funds to support families affected by work-related fatality, life-altering injury, or occupational disease. Steps for Life Sudbury takes place on April 29 at Workplace Safety North, 235 Cedar St. Registration opens at 9 a.m., and the walk kicks off at approximately 10:30 a.m. Learn more at www.stepsforlife.ca.

Swing into Spring vendor fair 

April 29 

Check out the Swing into Spring event at the Northbury Hotel from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 29. Check out a selection of handmade crafts and goods from local vendors. Door prizes include movie passes, gift cards, confections, ect. Free parking and admission. 

TNO presents G’zaagiin maleńki: je te promets une forêt

April 29 

Guided by the seasons and the sacred circle of the Indigenous Medicine Wheel, three artists come together on stage. An Abitibi cellist, a French and Anishinaabe actress and musician, and a director emigrated from Poland create an immersive space weaving sounds, echoes, textures, movement and poetry for all the senses. Drum, cello, voice, breath and gestures resonate together, forming an imaginary and mythical forest where young children will be able to make their way through the soundscapes. This half-hour-long show is aimed at toddlers and young kids aged 18 months to six years old. It runs at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. April 29 at Place des Arts. Tickets available online here.

A Night in Africa Gala

April 29 

Take part in the 10th Annual A Night In Africa Gala, an evening celebrating arts, culture, and cuisine from across the African continent in support of ZLT Hope Homes. The event takes place starting at 6 p.m. April 29 at Science North’s Vale Cavern. The evening will feature incredible live entertainment, a delicious meal featuring African foods and wine, a silent auction, interactive activities, and more. All proceeds will support the ZLT Hope Homes Survivor Support Program, which offers safe shelter and psychosocial support to children and teens affected by sexual violence in Nairobi, Kenya. The dress code is formal wear. African attire is welcomed. Tickets are $130 per person, or $1,000 per table (8 seats). Purchase tickets online here.

Concert in support of Joan Mantle Music Trust

April 29 

Local performers will join music students, teachers and graduates of Rainbow Schools to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Joan Mantle Music Trust during a gala Community Concert on Saturday, April 29. The concert will begin at 7 pm in the Sheridan Auditorium of Sudbury Secondary School. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students. Doors will open at 6:15 pm for a Silent Auction which will be held throughout the evening. All proceeds will support music education in Rainbow Schools. Sudbury Catholic board PIC Carousel evening 

May 2 

After three years, the annual Carousel event hosted by the Sudbury Catholic District School Board Parent Involvement Committee is back in person. This event is geared for parents/guardians and educators. Sessions will include Supporting Mental Health & Well Being, Cyber Safety, Building Resiliency, Homework Support, Special Education, Coding, Preparing Your Child for Post-Secondary, Literacy: Supporting Reading @ Home, and Learning About Secondary Programming. The event takes place May 2 from 6-8 p.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School

Sudbury Performance Group presents Cabaret

May 4-13

In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920's draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee's bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin's natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally's boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. Musical numbers include "Willkommen," "Cabaret," "Don't Tell Mama" and "Two Ladies." Sudbury Performance Group presents “Cabaret” at the Thorneloe University theatre May 4-13. Sudbury Burlesque presents A Tease Through Time 

May 4-6

Flowers aren’t the only things springing into view this spring. Sudbury Burlesque is back with their latest spectacle of a show: A Tease Through Time. This time, it’s all about time. Get ready to travel back and forth in the weirdest and fluffiest time machine Sudbury has ever seen. A Tease Through Time is presented May 4, 5 and 6 at The Grand Theatre at 28 Elgin Street. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the show beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance at SudburyBurlesque.com. Limited physical general admission tickets are available at Tucos Tacos Lounge, Hotstart Used Cars, Cosmic Dave’s Guitar Shop, and Between Us Lover’s Boutique.

Earthdancers performances 

May 5-6

Be immersed in a multitude of modern and contemporary dance with eclectic music, Graham-inspired choreography, and passionate artistry. Joining the earthdancers in this, their 30th annual benefit performance, are earthdancers alumni from many of their earlier years, including Heidi Strauss. They are honoured to be performing the choreography of Sunny Horvath, one of their founding members, onstage once again. Also presenting their choreographic work are former earthdancers Lauren Foy, April Machum, Emily Macdonald, and Sara Machum. You will not want to miss fantastic live performances by guest cellist David Macdonald and pianist Damien Laframboise! There are three performances: May 5 at 7:30 p.m., May 6 at 1 p.m. and May 6 at 7:30 p.m. The show runs at Place des Arts. Purchase tickets online here.

SSO presents Jazz on the Rocks

May 6

The Sudbury Jazz Orchestra joins the SSO on stage to explore how jazz has become part of mainstream classical music, how one has influenced the other and how these two elements can be combined for a fantastic, if perhaps unusual, concert with guest soloist Christian Overton. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. May 6 at Laurentian University’s Fraser Auditorium. Tickets available online here.

Clean Up Blitz 

May 6

It’s time to register for the City of Greater Sudbury’s annual springtime clean-up blitz. “Show your community pride and do your part for the environment by registering in the Clean Up Blitz event,” the city stated in a news release. The blitz will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 6. “Registered participants will spend two hours picking up litter on a designated public roadside.” Participants must register by Friday, April 28. Register your group at any Citizen Service Centre/Library or online at GreaterSudbury.ca/Cleanup. Safety vests, gloves and garbage bags will be supplied. All participants must review safety tips and sign a waiver. Names of participants listed on the waiver forms will be entered in a draw to win prizes.

Cinco de Mayo celebration and fundraiser

May 6 

The Sudbury Women’s Centre has partnered with local restaurant La Casa Mexicana for a taco bar Cinco de Mayo celebration and fundraiser. The event will be held Saturday, May 6 from 4:30-8:30 p.m. at La Casa Mexicana. “Stop in for some great food, live entertainment and salsa dancing with Zoi Monroy,” said a press release. “Vegan and vegetarian options are available.” Tickets are $40 each, with 15 per cent of proceeds will be donated to the Sudbury Women’s Centre to support women, girls, trans and non-binary individuals access basic needs, education, referrals and workshops. Sudbury Art Club spring show and sale

May 6-7

The Sudbury Art Club are holding their annual spring show and art sale on May 6 and 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carmichael Community Centre, situated at 1388 Bellevue Dr. Stop by to see all the latest works of art in oil, acrylic, mixed media and watercolor. Door prize, and free entry and parking.

Hike for Hospice 

May 7 

On Sunday, May 7, the Sudbury Hospice Foundation will host the Sudbury Credit Union Hike in support of Maison McCulloch Hospice. The 2023 Hike will take place at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the Hike will begin at 1 p.m. Pledge forms are available for pick up at any Sudbury Credit Union branch, at Maison McCulloch Hospice and online at www.maisonsudburyhospice.org.

La Slague presents Marc Hervieux

May 7 

With his contagious smile and his legendary tenor, Marc Hervieux has charmed Quebec, Canada and the world. A versatile artist, he has collaborated with large symphony orchestras as well as contemporary artists. Marc Hervieux is happy to be back on the road to perform a medley of songs sure to bring a smile to your face and take you on a great musical journey – in French, Italian and English. Art Gallery of Sudbury presents Émergence

Until May 7

The Art Gallery of Sudbury is hosting Émergence, which runs until May 7. Representing a cross-section of artistic development from Grades 9 through 12 in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography and mixed media, this exhibition of student artwork is an opportunity for the students to share their vision with family, friends, and the public. It also provides an opportunity for students to participate in a professionally executed art exhibition, providing the student artists recognition, encouragement, mentorship, a positive art experience and more. Admission to the exhibition is by donation.

Rotary Club lobster fundraiser

May 12 

The Rotary Club of Sudbury has picked a date for its annual lobster dinner fundraiser. The event will be held May 12 at the Caruso Club. Bring your dancing shoes because live entertainment will be provided by Toronto’s Saturday Night Superstars, a five-piece band playing songs from the 1960s to today’s best hits. Tickets are $175 each or $1,400 for a table of eight, which includes dinner and bar, cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. with live band and dance to follow. Jazz Sudbury Emerging Artist Showcase

Submissions accepted until May 12 

Jazz Sudbury is beginning its annual search for talented up-and-coming Ontario jazz musicians ready to play the main stage of the Jazz Sudbury Festival this September. Jazz Sudbury’s Emerging Artist Showcase opened for submissions April 20, and will remain open until May 12. The three finalists will be determined by a panel of industry experts. These finalists will be invited to perform at the Emerging Artist Showcase in front of the judges June 23. Comedian Derek Edwards performance

May 13 

Comedian Derek Edwards is known as one of the most popular stand-up comics in Canada. He lives in the Toronto area, but he loves getting back home into the small towns of Northern Ontario where the audiences seem to have more of an understanding of his laid back style and his ability to find humour in everyday things.  Edwards is off on a 12-city Ontario tour that will see him appearing in Sudbury at the Fraser Auditorium on Saturday May 13 (Tickets available at the Sudbury Theatre Centre box office). His new 90-minute performance is called in Praise of the Ostrich, a reference to pulling his head out of the sand long enough to offer commentary on the current state of affairs. 

St. Andrew’s church 50th anniversary concert

May 13 

St. Andrew’s United Church is hosting a concert May 13 celebrating the church’s building 50 years ago. The concert, which starts at 6:30 p.m. in the church’s sanctuary, will feature the renowned Penderecki String Quartet. Sudbury’s Bel Canto Chorus will join the Penderecki for several numbers. A presentation precedes the concert, and a reception follows. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the St. Andrew’s Place Office, 111 Larch Street (phone 705-675-5303 #200 to arrange pickup) or at the Sudbury Theatre Centre Box Office for cash only purchases.

Heart of Ruth fundraiser

May 13 

Heart of Ruth Mission is hosting a Spring Social and Market Fundraiser on May 13, Mother’s Day weekend. The event will feature vendors, a Mother’s Day High Tea style lunch, a large penny table, 50/50 draw, bake sale and much more. It will take place at 1520 Bancroft Ave in Sudbury between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The entrance fee will be $2, with meals available for purchase. Heart of Ruth Mission was officially established in 2012 after a demonstrated need for help in the community of Gede, Kenya. Rainbow House Children’s Home has been the main focus and funding recipient of the organization ensuring the safety and education of the children. 

Brunch at Ste. Anne des Pins parish hall

May 14 

The Knights of Columbus will serve brunch at the Ste. Anne des Pins parish hall May 14 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On the menu will be eggs, pancakes, beans, ham, toast, sausages, fruit cocktail, tea, coffee and juice. Price: adults $10, children 12 and under, $5 for the first child in the family, other children from the same family are free of charge. Homegrown and Handmade Community Market

May 14 

You’re invited to check out the Homegrown and Handmade community makers’s market May 14. The show runs 12-4 p.m. at Northbury Hotel and Conference Centre. The show will feature food items, artwork, clothing and more. Check out a vintage fashion show from two local businesses, Kulta Vintage and Business Kasual by Kalea. Bring a non-perishable food item for local food banks.

GNO presents Seed the Skin exhibit 

Runs until May 20

The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario’s latest exhibition, Seed the Skin by Fransaskois artist Laura St. Pierre, is just in time for springtime and Earth Day. The exhibition is presented from April 6 to May 20, inclusively. Admission to the GNO, which is located in the Place des Arts building, is always free. Presented in the form of an immersive installation, the exhibition Seed the Skin continues the ecological approach of artist Laura St. Pierre, highlighting the relationship we have with the environment while exposing the harmful impacts of our activities. St. Pierre will use her residency at the GNO as a laboratory to experiment with conversion of the electromagnetic vibrations of plants into music. The public will be able to "listen" to the plants! The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario's hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. 

Centre Club d’Âge d’Or de la Vallée

May activities 

Mondays cafe, card games, exercises, dinner and knitting, Tuesdays line dancing and bean bag toss, Wednesdays yoga and paper tole, Thursdays beading, Fridays darts, line dancing and cribbage. The Fête des membres runs May 5, brunch on May 7, community dinner with amateur musicians May 15 and diner amical May 18. More information is available through the club’s Facebook page.

Calendar photo submissions 

June 1 deadline 

Sudbury Arts Council (SAC) invites submissions for its 2024 desk calendar. This year's theme is Iconic Sudbury. Included in a list of iconic images might be the Big Nickel, the Super Stack, the watertower, the Silver Bullet, the Flour Mill Silos, Capreol trains, the AY Jackson lookout, the Sudbury Wolves, historic buildings, The Bridge of Nations, Science North, the Art Gallery of Sudbury, the Grotto, recognizable sculptures and so much more. Participants may enter a maximum of two images, horizontal format only. Photographers selected for the calendar will receive an honorarium as well as five copies of the calendar. The deadline for submission is June 1, 2023. Submissions should be sent to [email protected].
