A group from the University of British Columbia (UBC) was crowned the winning team during the 2024 Goodman Gold Challenge: Critical Minerals Edition in Sudbury on Feb. 2.

Hosted by Laurentian University’s Goodman School of Mines, the sixth annual event welcomed teams of students from across Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. to participate in a multi-day investment challenge.

Their test was to evaluate the stock portfolios of three gold companies currently trading on the TSX or TSX-V and recommend the company with the best investment potential.

This year’s participating companies were Magna Mining, Canada Nickel, and Talon Metals.

Ten schools sent teams to take part in the event, including Queen’s University, Brock University, University of Manitoba, Colorado School of Mines (U.S.), Bishop’s University, University of British Columbia, Toronto Metropolitan University, University of Toronto, Camborne School of Mines (U.K.), and Laurentian University.

Dex Feliciano, Dane Campbell, Arjun Singh, and Garrett Bowley won their pitch by choosing to invest in Canada Nickel.

As the winning team, the UBC students will share in prize money worth the equivalent of four ounces of gold.

“A big congratulations goes to the University of British Columbia, winners of the sixth annual Goodman Gold Challenge," said Jonathan Goodman, chair of the Goodman Gold Challenge, and chair and CEO of Dundee Corp., in a news release.

"As someone who has worked in the investment business for a long time, watching these students present their work is always so impressive and gives me great hope for the future of the industry.”

Colorado School of Mines placed second in the competition, while a team from the University of Manitoba placed second.

All participants received Sudbury-made miner’s lunchboxes for their participation.

Launched in 2017, the Goodman Gold Challenge was Goodman's idea. In 2013, Goodman's father, Ned Goodman, who founded Dundee Corp., contributed to an endowment fund to support mining-related programs at Laurentian and became the namesake for the university's Goodman School of Mines.
