Debbi Nicholson, the long-serving president and CEO of the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, has announced her retirement in 2024.
At the helm of the organization for 45 years, Nicholson is the longest serving chamber executive in Canada.
In a statement to members, Geoff Hatton, the chamber's board chair, commended Nicholson for her “outstanding leadership” during her tenure.
“Debbi’s achievements both in her role as the president and CEO of the chamber and as a valued community leader are remarkable,” Hatton said in his message.
“When our delegates visit the provincial and federal AGMs (annual general meetings), Debbi’s reputation precedes her, and that recognition comes from decades of earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues.”
Nicholson’s leadership helped achieve a number of accomplishments for the community, Hatton said, citing the four-laning of Highway 69 as an example.
Though not quoted directly, Hatton said Nicholson “thoroughly enjoyed and is grateful to have served the Greater Sudbury business community for so many decades.”
“She felt that the time is right for her to step aside and for new leadership to guide our chamber as it works to undertake a new strategic plan and other new initiatives later this year.
Hatton said the chamber will now embark on a search for a new leader, noting that Nicholson has offered her services during the transition period.
Nicholson will officially retire on June 30.
