Thanks to financial support from the provincial and federal governments the City of Greater Sudbury will invest an additional $14 million on 17 water and wastewater projects in 2017.

The federal government is contributing $7 million to the total funding for the 17 capital projects, while the province and city are contributing $3.5 million each.

The new funding comes from the $1.1-billion Clean Water and Wasterwater Fund, which came out of an agreement between the province of Ontario and the federal government.

Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger said the new funding places the city half a year ahead of its plans for capital funding on water and wastewater projects.

Construction on most of the 17 projects is due to start in June and July 2017.

They include more than $3 million to upgrade the water main line beneath Spruce Street, and $2.9 million to upgrade the main water line beneath First Avenue in Coniston.

Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré said he is pleased the projects cover the old city of Sudbury and the outlying areas.

“If you don't invest in water and sewer in the long run pipes bust and you're repairing roads that were already done,” he said.

Serré the federal government's infrastructure plans are focusing on water and wastewater infrastructure before they start addressing road infrastructure.
