Complaints about nuisance bears in the city have declined since the spring, according to the city's online reporting tool.

The map highlights where bears have been sighted across Greater Sudbury, and when the sightings were reported.

While there were several sightings in the early spring, better growing weather has meant there's more food for the bruins in the wild, where most will stay unless they need to look farther for their next meal.

So far, there have been 341 bear sightings reported to the line, including five over the last week. Most incidents involve someone seeing a bear root through garbage in a neighbour's yard or ambling up the street.

The decline in calls, and the addition of two bear technicians this summer by the Ministry of Natural Resources in Sudbury, has meant no bear has been put down by police this season.

Police Chief Paul Pedersen said in May that the bear techs ease the burden on police.

"We don't want to have to be in a position where we have to dispatch bears,” Pedersen said. “That is never something we want to do. Wildlife management is not a core function of policing. But public safety is. So we see this as something that will reduce the impact on the resources of the police service."

Last year, the city received 1,476 calls about nuisance bears. The problem spiked in 2015, when a poor spring led to a poor crop, and to numerous bear complaints.

At one point, Greater Sudbury passed a bylaw that required residents to put out their garbage no earlier than 5 a.m. to discourage the nighttime visitors, but backed down after public outcry.
