For the 10th year, Derek Durkac has decorated his New Sudbury home for the Christmas season to create one of the city's most impressive light displays.
As a child Durkac helped his father set up the Christmas lights around their home, and has kept up the tradition into adulthood.
“Christmas is my favourite holiday. I love Christmas,” he said.
His elaborate displays have gotten a bit bigger every year, and for the past five years he has used that popularity to collect donations for the Sudbury Food Bank.
“Every year I try to add a little bit more to my display. I have 16,000 lights,” Durkac said.
This year's display includes a new gingerbread house and a couple of elves made out of painted plywood.
Due to rising hydro rates, Durkac said he has had to limit the dates and times he turns on his display.
“Even though I have LED lights it does add up over the time period,” he said.
Until Dec. 20 the display will be on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Leading up to Christmas, Durkac will also keep the lights on during those same hours from Tuesday, Dec. 20 to Thursday, Dec. 22.
On the nights of Dec. 10, 16, 17, 20 and 21 he will also be out on his yard dressed as Santa, where he will collect monetary donations for the Sudbury Food Bank's Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive.
In past years he has collected as much as 900 food items and $400.
Durkac's home is located at 1225 Woodbine Ave. in New Sudbury.
