A holiday gift from Huntington

University caps annual tree lighting with donation to SAVS

Huntington University kicked off the holiday season on Nov. 23 with their annual tree lighting ceremony.

As is customary with the ceremony, the university also made a donation to a local organization, this year choosing Sudbury & Area Victim Services (SAVS) as the recipient of $2,500.

The money will be used to support the organization which offers 24-hour, seven day a week, community-based services which provide immediate short-term crisis intervention for persons affected by crime, tragedy and disaster.

"At this time of year when joy and celebration are the main themes it's easy to forget that not everyone is sharing in the same experience," said Kevin McCormick, Huntington president and vice chancellor.

"The team of professionals and volunteer crisis responders at SAVS offere a crucial service that provides emotional support and practical assistance to families and individuals in times of crisis, no matter the season."

On hand for the ceremony were both Marc Guerin, SAVS president, and Erica Gertz, SAVS executive director, who both witnessed the lighting of the 45-foot tall tree (the tallest Christmas tree in Northern Ontario) and expressed their gratitude to Huntington.

"As we mark the start of the holiday season, we are extremely grateful to Huntington University and their efforts to give back to the community through this generous donation to SAVS," said Guerin.

"Donations such as these allow our organization to continue to offer free and confidential assistance to victims of crime and sudden tragedy while ensuring they receive intervention, support and assistance."
