Local new music station KiSS 105.3FM, celebrated its 13th annual Radiothon of Hope in support of the Northern Cancer Foundation's (NCF) Northeast Cancer Center (NECC) on Nov. 13
The goal for this year's event was to replace the aging equipment of the NECC's chemotherapy suite with 13 new chemotherapy chairs, each costing approximately $2,200.
KiSS 105.3FM radio hosts broadcast live from the cancer centre lobby from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with an additional drop-off location hosted at the New Sudbury Centre from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Throughout the day, KiSS 105.3FM interviewed supporters, donors, and cancer centre staff, who shared heartwarming stories and innovations within the field of cancer care and research.
After the phones stopped ringing and the silent auction closed, the Radiothon of Hope raised $57,200, effectively doubling its goal of raising enough funds to purchase 13 new chemo chairs.
“The Radiothon of Hope is always such a special day for KiSS 105.3 and 2018 was no different. The community support that the cancer patients and the Northern Cancer Foundation have in Sudbury is so strong and we’re so proud to bring their stories to our listeners year after year.” says Michelle Russel, Program and Promotions Director at KiSS 105.3.
“After we crossed the $1 million raised mark last year, I wasn’t sure that we could top it, but here we are. It was really humbling to see so many community members open their hearts to the Radiothon. The amount of calls we received from individuals looking to buy a chemo chair was staggering, ” says Tannys Laughren, Executive Director of the Northern Cancer Foundation.
Over the past 13 years, the Radiothon of Hope has rasied $1,161,200, 100 per cent of which stays within Sudbury to support the Northeast Cancer Centre.
