Magneto Therapy and Acupuncture Clinic is doing their part to support cancer research by helping raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society and Relay for Life.

Patients of the clinic who donate to the cause are being given the opportunity to win two free acupuncture treatments. For every dollar a patient donates they will receive a ballot to be entered into a monthly draw to win the appointments.

clip“I decided to do the Relay for Life due to the fact that my uncle was diagnosed with colon cancer before Christmas and everybody knows someone who's effected by cancer,” said certified acupuncturist Crystal Best. “We also treat cancer patients within our clinic so there was an interaction there.”

The clinic, which treats over 130 patients each week, is hoping that this initiative, on top of raising money for the cause, will bring a focus to the benefits of acupuncture in treating cancer patients with their symptoms and pain issues. Acupuncture has been fully supported by the National Institute of Health as part of the treatment plan for cancer.

Best explained that acupuncture has been effective for cancer patients by helping to eliminate nausea associated with chemo- or radiotherapies. It has also been an effective treatment for pain, resulting in a reduced need for narcotics, and can also enhance immune function, as well as a number of other benefits.

To date the clinic has raised over $400 and is hoping to raise a lot more.

The clinic is located at 30 Notre Dame St. E in Azilda. For more information, phone 983-0910.
