Adanac Ski Club is currently looking to the Sudbury community for their help in winning the Mackenzie Top Peaks Challenge – an online competition that awards $50,000 to the winning entry.

The local ski club has been trying to raise money for the Adanac Ski Hill for years now. The city-owned facility currently has a number of repairs that are necessary to accommodate the growing ski racing club.

The club grew from having a few dozen members to 130 members just over the past five years. Winning the jackpot of $50,000 would mean a lot towards improving the conditions of the club and the hill.

“Should the Adanac Ski Club be named as the recipient of the Mackenzie Top Peaks award, the funds will be used to help construct a much needed multi-use operational shack at the base of the Adanac Ski Hill, one which will greatly help service the needs of both the club itself and the entire Sudbury skiing community,” the Adanac Ski Club’s written statement read.

“The area where a very small timing shack currently resides would be replaced by a new building that would not only offer a main timing area with a view of the entire hill but would also feature a large storage area for racing supplies (gates, fencing, race gear, etc…) as well as a changeroom and video room area to assist with the training of our competitive skiers.”

The local hill partnered with a local architectural firm that donated their time to crafting a design for a new building should the club win the large sum of money from the contest.

The funds would also impact local school boards who utilize the ski facility for a wide range of purposes.

Angele Carriere, a representative of the Adanac Ski Club, spoke with Sudbury.com over a phone interview on what it would mean for the club to win the money.

“It would be absolutely amazing (for us to win the prize). We've been trying to fundraise to replace our existing race headquarters for years now. It's too small, it's rotten. It doesn't even have a floor, it floods every spring. We have to rent other trailers on sites just to house our equipment, because it's not big enough,” Carriere said, explaining the current circumstances they have for the community race headquarters.

“So getting this $50,000 would actually allow us to break ground this spring and create this new building for the team but also for the community. So I can't even tell you how many chocolate bars we'd have to sell to make $50,000. I don't think there are words to describe how much it would mean to us.”

So Carriere is calling out to Sudbury for their help in winning this competition and reaching the peak. Here are a few ways that Sudburians can contribute points to the team.

The Mackenzie Top Peaks Challenge is an online challenge that tallies votes from online voters, as well as instagram hashtag use. To vote online, for the Adanac Ski Hill team, please visit this web link here.

The second way to add points to the team is by using the competition’s set of hashtags on a public instagram post. The hashtags used in support of the Adanac team are #TopPeakAdanac2022 and #MackenzieTopPeak2022

The third way of generating points is by following the competition’s weekly challenge. Each week the competition posts a challenge that people can recreate and post to Instagram. This would earn the team 25 points per post using the appropriate hashtags.

“For example, this week, it's called a ‘Mutual Fun’ challenge. And so the video should include people having fun in the snow outside. Whether it's throwing snowballs or doing snow angels together, as long as there's two people in the video in the snow, and using the hashtags as well. And that can generate bonus points, which are 25 points each,” Carriere elaborated.

The challenge will stop counting votes on March 28 and the winners will be announced on April 5.
