Canadian Armed Forces Captain and Sudbury native Dr. Ray Wiss will share his experiences working as a front-line physician in Afghanistan with students at Algonquin Road Public School Nov. 9.

Wiss was invited to the school in honour of Veterans' Week.

“Our students are looking forward to learning about Dr. Wiss’ brave journey,” said Algonquin Road Public School principal Cathy Nursall, in a press release. “It will coincide with Veterans’ Week and Remembrance Day.”

Wiss enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 2007 and was stationed in Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban and the most intense combat zone in Afghanistan.

While in Kandahar, he documented his experiences in a diary, which was published in a book called “FOB DOC: A doctor on the Front Lines in Afghanistan.” The book made Amazon’s Top 100 Books list of 2009.

Throughout his career, Wiss served as an Infantry Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, a Director of Recreation in a maximum security institution, and a paramedic in a third world war zone.

Today, Wiss is recognized internationally as one of the most influential physicians in our nation for introducing ultrasound technology into Canada’s emergency medical practice.
