Greater Sudbury native Alex Trebek is being honoured for his dedication to geography by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

Trebek, best known as the host of TV's Jeopardy! trivia show, is being honoured for his "dedication to the popularization of geography."

This dedication is shown through Trebek's involvement in the National Geographic Bee, the Canadian Geography Challenge, and the National Geographic World Championships, as well as the inclusion of geography-based subjects in Jeopardy.

"I love working with young people, and to see how bright these young geographers are," Trebek said in a press release.

He referenced such events such as the oil spill in the Gulf of New Mexico and the volcanic eruption in Iceland.

"These are geographical events, and they affect people directly," he said.

Trebek is the keynote speaker at The Royal Canadian Geographical Society's College of Fellows Dinner on November 4th, 2010, at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa. The 2010 award winners will receive their medals at this event.

First presented in 1972, the Society's Gold Medal is awarded in recognition of a particular achievement by an individual or a group in the field of geography, or for a significant national or international event.
