After the latest dump of snow, all Greater Sudbury streets should be cleared of snow by Friday morning.

The snow event was declared over at 10 a.m. Thursday, after between 12 and 15 centimeters of snow dropped overnight, according to a city spokesperson.

City standards dictate all roads must be cleared within 24 hours of a snow event ending, which means streets should be clear by 10 a.m. Friday.

Crews were out salting and sanding roads prior to the winter storm’s arrival on Wednesday. The city initiated a full call-out of contractors at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, as soon as eight centimetres of snow had accumulated.

A full call-out includes more than 50 pieces of machinery operating throughout the municipality, which operate out of five depots spread throughout operating to the same standard.

The city’s policies dictate all roads are clear and passable within 24 hours of a winter storm event ending. More specifically, the timeline says:

  • Main routes are sanded and salted within four hours of a snowstorm beginning
  • Main roads are cleared within eight hours of a storm ending when at least five centimetres of snow has fallen
  • All residential and rural roads are plowed and sanded within 24 hours of a storm ending, by which time sidewalks have also been plowed and sanded
  • Bus stops are cleared during the first night following a storm in which at least eight centimetres of snow has dropped

The city’s Class One to Class Three roads (main arterial or secondary collector roads) are cleared to bare or near-bare pavement, while the balance of city roads are maintained to a snow-packed and sanded surface. Click here for a list of which roads are considered class one to three.

In the event roads aren’t clear within the 24-hour period, the city can be contacted through the online 311 portal, accessible 24/7, as well as the 311 customer service phone number and online live chat, which are available from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Greater Sudbury Police Service issued a winter driving reminder on social media this morning, urging motorists to slow down, keep fuel tanks at least half full, clear off vehicles properly, top up windshield washer fluid and have emergency supplies on hand, among other tips.
