The Sudbury Horticultural Society will be planting four Toka Plum trees at Twin Forks Community Garden on Sept. 27 in celebration of National Tree Day.

Following the planting, Cultivate Your Neighbourhood will be serving a fall harvest soup made from some ingredients grown in nearby community gardens. The event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 27 and commence at 11 a.m. The event is free.

Cultivate Your Neighbourhood, a branch of the local not-for-profit Foodshed Project, has had a very busy spring and summer starting seeds within 21 local schools and hubs across the city.

Students planted their seedlings in 10 community gardens across the city. The Twin Forks Community Garden was one of the recipients of four school plantings, and to accommodate such a high number of new seedlings, additional garden-beds were created this season.

"As autumn is in the air, we are celebrating National Tree Day and the efforts of the students and dedicated community members who worked hard to grow their own produce this season," said a news release from the Sudbury Horticultural Society.

"Join us to plant some fruit trees and share in a community grown, local harvest-soup treat."

Cultivate Your Neighbourhood is in need of volunteers to help host harvest lunches at various schools in the next few weeks. If you would like to become a volunteer to deliver harvest lunches in schools and/or to volunteer for next year’s school programming, contact [email protected], or phone Leigh Anne at 705-596-221.
