Baby it’s cold outside

When you weigh 21 ounces, the world can seem like a cold place. That’s what the tiniest babies weigh in the neonatal intensive ward at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Now they’ll get a quilt to keep them extra warm.

When you weigh 21 ounces, the world can seem like a cold place. That’s what the tiniest babies weigh in the neonatal intensive ward at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Now they’ll get a quilt to keep them extra warm. “I thought it was a good project to do for the little ones,” said Denise Rutledge, president of Current Quilts and Stitching Guild on Manitoulin Island.

Rutledge and members of her group, 37 strong, partnered with Westview Quilters to sew 40 quilts which they donated to the hospital.

The little girl in the photograph has been in the neonatal ward since May 4. A twin, she weighed two pounds, 11 ounces at birth, said RN Angie Wiwczor. She now weighs five pounds.

The ward looks after babies at a gestational age of 29 weeks and up.
