The City of Greater Sudbury Fire Services is advising residents to use caution when discarding cigarettes and other smokers’ materials in wildland areas of the city, as these can cause fires.

Under the Forest Fire Prevention Act, all smokers’ materials are to be used in a manner that does not pose a risk to the creation of a fire and once used, must be removed from the forest area, leaving no items behind.

Anyone found to have started a fire through the careless discard of smokers’ materials or any other items that may start a fire can be charged under the legislation and could be held liable for the expense
of extinguishing the fire.

Residents are being reminded that the City of Greater Sudbury and surrounding area remain under a high fire warning level, and are urged to be careful when using and disposing of smokers’ material to ensure personal and public safety.
