Beavers recognize distinguished youth during celebration

Beaver scouts gathered at Kivi Park to celebrate year-end awards

More than a dozen young beavers gathered at Kivi Park on Saturday, they built their dams and prepared to celebrate the end of the year for 15th Sudbury Beaver Scouts.

Apart from the year-end celebration, the Beaver scouts also celebrated some of their finest members.

Denis Anderson, 13, a member of 15th Sudbury Scouting for four years, was awarded the most prestigious Scouting award – Medal of the Maple.

“Denis is a brilliant kid (and) throughout the years, he has gone above and beyond his responsibilities," said Dawn Brown, area support manager for Scout Canada's Northern Ontario Council. "One of our guiding principles is that we are a youth-led program, Denis has taken this to the next level. Denis is somebody the leaders can count on to be there, and that’s why we are awarding him today."

Anderson is the tenth person awarded the Medal of the Maple in Northern Ontario Council since its inception in 2007.

“Denis arrives each week to Beaver meetings ahead of schedule," Brown said. "He immediately asks what he can do to help.  Denis is there to do whatever necessary to ensure the Beaver Scouts have every opportunity to learn and to grow.”

The Medal of the Maple for Distinguished Youth Service was created by the members of Scouts Canada’s National Youth Network, to honour youth who have contributed to the Scouting movement and the spirit of Scouting through community service, extraordinary Scouting participation, and a solid system of personal values.

"It just makes me very happy to be able to help other kids, so I continue to do it," Anderson said.

Youth assistant Jeremy Anderson and Cub scout Derika Russel also received kudos for their leadership abilities with the Beaver Scout group.
