Seven Sudbury students are off to the 2015 Canada-Wide Science Fair in Fredericton, New Brunswick after impressing judges this past weekend.

The 46th Sudbury Regional Science Fair took place at Laurentian University March 28-29. A total of 56 projects from 86 budding scientists were on display. Projects were judged by more than 50 professional scientists from the local area.

Eighteen regular awards and 44 special awards were presented for the scientific initiatives of these brilliant students.

“The science fair is a great event where students can share their work with professional scientists and the general public,” said Nicole Chiasson, president of the Sudbury Regional Science Fair Committee. “It is wonderful that such an event can get students thinking about the world around them and at the same time let them have fun with science.”

An additional award was presented at the Sudbury Regional Science Fair this year to recognize a teacher for excellence in science. Pierre Taillon, a teacher at Collège Notre-Dame, was recognized for his strong passion for teaching science, for his extensive involvement with science fair projects in his school and for his dedication in helping students succeed at their science fair project.

The Sudbury Regional Science Fair (SRSF) offers hands-on science experiences to students from grade 7 to 12. It wishes to encourage teachers to use project-based science in the classroom to get students interested in science.

This experience connects students to professional scientists whether through mentorship of their project or through the judging experience at the fair. Since starting the SRSF, approximately 4,600 students have participated at the regional science fair level and 272 students have had all expense paid trips to the Canada-Wide Science Fair.
