Cambrian College launched its third annual respect campaign this week. The student-led initiative aims to foster greater understanding and tolerance among the college’s students and staff.

The campaign promotes the concepts of commitment, citizenship, and character throughout the year with a variety of events that begin with the launch week.

In addition to these cornerstone messages, the 2009/2010 campaign will highlight two themes: cell phone courtesy during the fall semester, and language use in the hallways during the winter semester.

“This year’s Respect campaign is an opportunity for everyone at Cambrian to reflect on what they can do to make the College a tolerant and inclusive place,” said Jamie Palahnuk, president of Cambrian’s Students’ Administrative Council.

“We want students to remember that respect is something we must all practice every day throughout the year, and that even the smallest changes in our behavior can make a difference.”

A variety of events and activities will be held in the main lobby of the college throughout the week, including:

Cell Phone Courtesy Day – Monday, November 2, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Students will be asked to complete the statement, “I show respect by…” to earn prizes. Posters will be placed around the college to remind students to be mindful of how they use their cell phone, whether they are in the library, in class, or in conversation with friends.

Stress Relief Day – Tuesday, November 3, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Various services from the college and the community will set up booths to promote services available to students. Free apples and oranges will be handed out to promote a healthy and stress-free lifestyle.

Dress Down for Respect – Wednesday, November 4, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Cambrian faculty and staff will demonstrate their support of the campaign by wearing respect t-shirts. Also, Jim Spencer, a professor in the School of Business, will be pedaling his stationary bike towards his goal of 800 km to help raise money for an orphanage in Tanzania, an initiative that shows how people can express respect within and for a community.

Busker Me Full – Thursday, November 5, all day
Students will share their talents on campus to raise money for the Cambrian College food bank.

“At Cambrian, we take great pride in creating a positive environment,” said Cambrian’s president, Sylvia Barnard. “This campaign serves as a reminder to the entire Cambrian community of the importance of respecting one another. I compliment the student governments for initiating and championing this campaign.”
