Derek Johnston competed in Heavy Equipment Service and Mike Miller in Industrial Mechanical Millwright, both earning silver medals.

This was the first time that a Millwright student from Cambrian entered in the competition.

“These medals of distinction reinforce the fact that Cambrian’s skilled trades programs are among the best in Canada,” Michel Barbeau, dean of Cambrian’s School of Skills Training and Community and Corporate Learning, said in a press release.

Roughly 1,900 competitors participated in the OTSC in more than 60 skilled trade areas. Cambrian sent 10 talented students from a variety of programs, including: Welding, Millwright, Heavy Equipment, and Computer Systems Technology. Winners at the Ontario championships advance to the national-level competition.

Cambrian also sent a recruitment team and its high-tech trade show booth to the OTSC.

Overall attendance at the event was estimated at 30,000 people, including parents, teachers, professors, and students from the elementary and post-secondary levels.

At last year’s provincial competition, Cambrian students earned gold and silver medals in Information Technology and bronze in Welding.

The Cambrian Foundation has established a bursary to assist students who earn medals in the Ontario Skills Competition.
