Do you have a child in French immersion or core French? Are you interested in being part of Canadian Parents for French (CPF)?

Rainbow District School Board will host an information session about CPF on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The session will take place in the Howard Shecter Room at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School is located at 275 Loach's Rd. Use the side entrance at the back of the parking lot to access the Howard Shecter Room.)

CPF was founded in 1977 by mainly English-speaking parents from across the country. CPF values the French language as an integral part of Canada and is dedicated to creating, supporting and promoting opportunities for young people to learn and use French as a second language.

Millions of Canadian children are benefiting today from the rich and rewarding experience offered by French second-language (FSL) education, a press release stated. Learning more than one language is increasingly recognized as a lifelong gift, enhancing a child's self-esteem and intellect while opening new doors to study, travel and employment.

As a grassroots organization, CPF has  thousands of individuals and families working at the community-level across Canada. CPF chapters work closely with provincial and territorial branches supported by a national office.

The group's services and activities have expanded over the years to parallel the remarkable growth in FSL education, the press release stated. CPF fulfills many roles, all of them supporting the children, parents and educators who have made Canada a world model for second language learning.

In addition, CPF:
- provides parents with the information, materials and access to activities needed to support their children's FSL education;
- compiles lists of French-language computer software, educational games and interesting Internet sites to help extend the learning experience outside the classroom;
- publishes the CPF Guide, a searchable database of all French immersion and extended core French programs in Canadian school systems;
- operates websites that provide answers to frequently asked questions on FSL education;
- holds skills building workshops and training sessions for volunteers and for parents;
- produces and distributes brochures and an annual report on the state of French as a Second Language education in Canada;
- publishes informative national and provincial/territorial newsletters for members;
- is a source of the latest information and research on French as a Second Language education.
