Afghanistan veteran Dr. Ray Wiss spoke to local French Catholic students about his experience as a medical doctor in the Canadian military, Nov. 9.
Using photos and video clips from the field, Wiss described the reality of war to high school students from École secondaire catholique l’Horizon in Val Caron and École secondaire catholique Champlain in Chelmsford.
Some of the photos included graphic images of bullet wounds and severely injured soldiers and children.
“I don't want to sugarcoat any of this for any Canadian, including these kids,” Wiss said. “I wanted to be honest.”
“War is ugly. It's hurtful, and painful.”
Wiss kept a diary during his time in Afghanistan that was later published under the title, FOB Doc: A Doctor on the Front Lines in Afghanistan. Following his second tour, he produced the book entitled, A Line in the Sand: Canadians at War in Kandahar.
He said he wrote the books so people would “get informed” and understand what's going on in the world.
“I still get asked by Canadians about my time in Iraq,” he said.
“Whether you support or oppose this war, do it from a position of knowledge.
“If you decide to send someone like me to die, to kill for you, you better be sure of what you're doing.”
