The Northern Cancer Foundation’s seventh annual Radiothon of Hope fundraiser hits the airwaves once again on Nov. 7 and 8.

Broadcast live from the Northeast Cancer Centre lobby, the goal of the two-day event is to raise money for much-needed equipment for use in cancer treatment.

Each year, listeners tune in to hear from cancer patients and their family members detailing their personal cancer journeys. Medical staff and researchers provide updates on the latest cancer treatment options and developments in the fight against cancer. And community supporters provide reasons behind the need to support the centre as a world-class facility in the region.

Drawing from a wish list of items put forward by the cancer centre staff, the radiothon successfully raises money for future equipment purchases by way of a “Hope Club membership” at a cost of $15 month.

People from all over Northeastern Ontario call in to a volunteer phone bank to make their pledges, and once enough money is raised for a piece of equipment, the next item is featured.

In its six-year history, the radiothon has raised more than $500,000 for the NCF.

Last year's broadcast featured a request for a specialized bathtub for patients with accessibility issues.

Often, patients undergoing treatment are weakened and require assistance in and out of the shower. The installation of this item in some of the Daffodil Terrace Lodge rooms allow patients and their caregivers to stay safe while they get clean and refreshed.

According to Tracy Laginski, co-ordinator of the Daffodil Terrace Lodge, the item added an extra amenity to the facility.

“It’s so easy to open the door, walk in and sit in a safe and comfortable tub,” she said. “There’s no need to worry about falling or needing assistance to get out. Patients really appreciate the accessibility.”

A photodocumentation system was another item on last year's wish list, specifically for the research department. As local cancer researcher, Dr. Robert Lafrenie, describes it, the system is a piece of technology that helps the lab obtain a permanent and quantitative record of research results.

It is important because it allows researchers to share their findings in publications and presentations — all of which contribute to the progress of cancer studies everywhere.

Tannys Laughren, executive director of the NCF, explained the importance of the annual event.

“The radiothon is very unique as it provides people with the opportunity to hear firsthand how their donations directly help the centre,” she said. “Equipment is so expensive to buy and maintain, so when we ask for help in purchasing a blanket warmer, for instance — they can hear how they’ve made a difference in a cancer patient's life.

Residents are encouraged to purchase a Hope Club membership at a cost of $15/month ($180/year) by calling 705-523-HOPE (4673). Credit cards are accepted.

Alternatively, you can have designated amounts withdrawn from your bank account each month.

Donations of any kind are always accepted online by visiting ncfsudbury.com.

The Northern Cancer Foundation (NCF) raises much-needed funds for the Northeast Cancer Centre in Sudbury.

Every dollar donated stays in the Northeast and helps fund vital patient care, new equipment and leading-edge cancer research.

The NCF provides critical support which enables the Northeast Cancer Centre to give patients the best care possible.
