Organizers are hoping to keep rolling with a longstanding volunteer program in Sudbury — the Canadian Cancer Society’s Wheels of Hope.

Senior communications manager Nuala McKee is calling on individuals to make a difference and sign up as a volunteer for the program which has been in place for decades.

"Imagine being told you have cancer, and that you need to travel far distances to get to life-saving treatment. Now imagine you don’t have a way of getting yourself to those treatments. For many living in Sudbury, this has been their reality," said McKee.

"That’s where the Canadian Cancer Society’s (CCS) Wheels of Hope comes in – a program that offers a ride for people with cancer who need help getting to and from their cancer care."

The CCS Wheels of Hope has been serving people in Ontario for 70 plus years, thanks to incredible volunteer drivers who share their compassion, generosity, and spirit with others, McKee said.

Over the years the volunteer drivers have stepped forward to provide rides to thousands of cancer patients needing to get to and from their care appointments, she added.

"Now, the Canadian Cancer Society is in need of volunteer drivers in Sudbury," McKee said.

"If you’re looking to fill some time in your day, love to drive and want to do something that helps people with cancer, please consider volunteering for Wheels of Hope. As a volunteer driver, you can give the gift of a ride to people with cancer in Sudbury who need help getting to and from their cancer care."

McKee said anyone interested in becoming a volunteer driver, can contact the Canadian Cancer Society at 1-888-939-3333 or visit the website here.
