The Sudbury Catholic District School Board announced this morning that it has reached a tentative labour deal with its secondary school teachers.

If ratified, the board said the agreement will prevent labour disruption for Greater Sudbury high school students into the year 2017.

“I am pleased that both sides worked together to reach an agreement, which is ultimately to the benefit of our students,” said school board chair Michael Bellmore in a news release. “Students will be able to complete their year while having all the experiences and supports that make for a great secondary education.”

“The optimism that I had going into these negotiations has been rewarded,” said Dan Charbonneau, president of the Sudbury Secondary Unit of Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association, also in a news release. “Having to negotiate a provincial central agreement and then a local agreement made this a long and challenging process, but I look forward to presenting the local agreement to our members for ratification.”

The parties cannot offer further comment or specifics about the agreement, until it is ratified by the board and OECTA members. The ratification process is expected to be completed by May 20.

The Sudbury Catholic board has approximately 1920 secondary students. The tentative agreement affects 152 OECTA members employed at four secondary schools and one adult education centre. The provincial and local agreements are in effect for the years 2014-2017. All monetary issues were agreed to at the provincial level, including a pay increase of 1.5% over three years.
