Children attending schools run by the Sudbury Catholic District School Board will participate in a board-wide mass and celebration at the Sudbury Arena May 27, starting at about 9:50 a.m.

For the first time ever in the school board's history, students from Grade 3 -12 (approximately 6,500 total) will take part in a church service with Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe and Auxilary Bishop Noel Simard.

The event is an extension of Catholic Education Week, which took place at the beginning of May. The theme of the event will be rejoicing in hope.

The day will begin with a performance by the Sudbury Catholic Rock Band Heroes, as well as an opening song performed by local aboriginal singer and teacher Verna Hardwick.

Community partners, parish priests and invited guests will also be taking part in this event.

Junior kindergarten to Grade 2 students will hold their own celebrations in their schools. They have been sent “faith kits” to help them explore the theme of rejoicing in hope.

They will be planting flowers and preparing school faith-filled spaces for the whole school to enjoy, stated a press release.
