The Week of the Child committee is playing host to its annual Free Family Fun Day in downtown Sudbury to kick off the week-long initiative.

A free pancake breakfast gets the ball rolling between 9-10:30 a.m. at 111 Larch St. The fun continues right through the afternoon and will be capped off with a free family swim at the YMCA from 2-3 p.m.

Week of the Child, running from Oct. 13-20, is a week dedicated to celebrating and valuing children in Greater Sudbury. Week of the Child Celebrations are organized by the Week of the Child Community Committee, made up of members from a variety of agencies who offer programs and services for children and their families.

Other events include:

-10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Indoor and outdoor family fun at Tom Davies Square including activities with local children services agencies such as crafts, displays, games.

-Family Entertainment — Family Zumba, Irish heritage dancers, Play Learn Think, Young Sudbury Singers and others.

-Free spaghetti lunch, sponsored by Buzzy Brown's Brasserie and Flanagan’s.

-Children's book exchange sponsored by the Learning City Initiative (bring in your gently used children’s books to trade).

-Children's Halloween costume exchange sponsored by the Centre de Sante Communautaire du Grand Sudbury (bring in last year's costume to trade for a new one).

-The skate exchange — pick up a pair of gently used skates from the skate exchange program.

-2 p.m. — Movie for children, Disney's Winnie the Pooh, in council chambers at Tom Davies Square, sponsored by Greater Sudbury Public Library

All activities are free and all children and their families are welcome. A full schedule will be published in the Oct. 11 edition of Northern Life, which includes a coupon for a free ride on Sudbury Transit to get there.

The festivities are sponsored by Sudbury Credit Union, the City of Greater Sudbury, the Sudbury District Health Unit, Sudbury Best Start and many other community partners.
